BEHIND THE LENS
Rick and Zoe Roberts share the story behind their award-winning 2024 collection, Refraction
What do you love about this collection?
The name of the collection holds a powerful statement for us: Refraction captures the story of shape shifting, light and changing of direction. It speaks to the hair work but also to where we are in our own careers and creative work. We poured everything into this and the results needed to reflect our constantly driving, evolving and growing creative exploration and development.
What was the inspiration for the hair?
The inspiration for the hair design comes from a fusion of classic elegance and modern session hair, oriental elements and silhouettes.
How did you go about setting up the shoot?
We have an incredible team that we have put together, from our photographer to make-up artist and stylist. Zoe likes to go and discover lots of different models and fresh new faces. We gave our salon team an opportunity to assist on this shoot to build their knowledge and skills.
Did anything go wrong or surprise you on the day?
Like all shoots, we always prepare for something to not go to plan. Maybe a model turns up with their hair shorter than you intended or it’s a different colour. We tend not to over plan each individual look. We will have some references for what we are interested in doing, but we actually finalise it on the day once we have the model in the seat. Having fresh organic ideas on the day can end with us creating some of our strongest looks. From previous shoots and experiences, we know that we can create something individual on the day without over planning it. Rick believes we should have a beginning, middle and an end, and everything in between is creativity, but with a shoot anything can happen, so you need to have the confidence to try things.
Do you have a significant memory from the day?
We’re always excited to see the vision come together, particularly at the end of the day when we do a snapshot of what we created. Our overwhelming feeling is one of joy and a pride in backing ourselves and showing our children that risk and hard work bring great reward.
