IT'S AS EASY AS ABC+

We chatted to Sassoon International Creative Director Mark Hayes on cutting and colouring the Sassoon way

Q. What is ABC+?

A. We are excited about launching the ABC+ Cutting And Colouring The Sassoon Way series. It’s an entirely new learning concept from Sassoon Academy and is available now as an in-person course at our global academies, as well as a streaming service or an online course. The innovative cutting techniques include reverse layering, disconnection and freehand methods – and we have included colouring techniques with every cut to illustrate how classic methods of slicing, weaving, tint, and freehand applications work in harmony with the Sassoon proprietary method of shape and balance.

Q. Why is it different to ABC?

A. ABC+ builds on our iconic ABC series, taking it to the next level. The concept is to use modern techniques that have been developed through our globally acknowledged collections and use them in combination with classic methods to create salon-oriented, wearable hair that will boost any stylist’s repertoire. Through variations of short, medium, and long hair, the ABC+ Cutting And Colouring The Sassoon Way Series is based on the world-renowned training that Sassoon deliver to their own teams.

Q. What can learners expect from the course?

A. The learner will study how to create modern wearable hair at any length and with any texture. This is a significant addition to the Sassoon Academy portfolio of courses and will provide the learner with a broad repertoire of new cut and colour looks to draw upon. The ABC+ matrix that underpins the course has been developed to present the latest in Sassoon methodology in an understandable format for hairdressers of all levels.

Q. How did you settle on 18 colour and cuts?

A. To be honest we could have shot 20 or more! However we decided that each category of short, medium or long hair should explore gradually changing dynamics of hair length and complementary colour techniques. For example, section A+ starts extremely short, with a scissor over combed channel cut, the looks then move through slightly longer layered shapes with intricate panels and disconnections. The A+ section then finishes with two relatively longer shapes that use undercutting and over direction to produce modern versions of the classic bias technique. For colour, in the long section for example, techniques vary from modern two-tone tint applications to weaved and foiled areas combined with slicing and singles. While each look fits into the overall matrix, each is designed for the wearer and has a different nuance that reflects their personality.

Q. Why is it so important to you to reach a global audience with ABC+?

A. Our original ABC series continues to underpin everything we do and has been so influential over the past 25 years. However, I felt that there have been so many new techniques and methods developed since their introduction that it was the right time to introduce a new level of ABC learning. It really is a culmination of all our work over the last quarter of a century from some of the most exciting and innovative hairdressers that continue to create looks that extend the Sassoon legacy and continue its influence globally.

Q. How long is the course?

A. The course will be designed around the needs of the learner. The duration can be from 2-5 days. Regardless of the study length, the learner will be able to study short, medium and long looks in cut and colour, producing modern, wearable, easy to care for hair, that today’s global clientele demands.

Q. Who is ABC+ good for?

A. I think ABC+ is perfect for any hair professional, regardless of experience or ability. Of course, it would be helpful if study had already taken place on the ABC techniques. It's designed for anyone who wants to upgrade their existing skill set or get a new insight. As Vidal always said “Without technique one cannot attain mastery of form”, and ABC+ continues, expands and amplifies that exact sentiment.
