EQUALITY WATCHDOG SHARES GUIDANCE FOR SCHOOLS ON AFRO HAIRSTYLES

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has shared guidance that those with Afro-textured hair should not be prevented from wearing natural hairstyles at school. The watchdog explained: “Uniform and appearance policies that ban certain hairstyles, without the possibility for exceptions to be made on racial grounds, are likely to be unlawful.” However, it is worth noting that the guidance will not affect government policy but is intended to help prevent hairbased discrimination.

The EHRC further explained: “Race is a protected characteristic under the 2010 Equality Act, which means a person must not be discriminated against because of their hair or hairstyle if it is associated with their race or ethnicity.”

Paediatric Neurosurgery Hairdressing Scheme Underway

The HBSA (Hairdressing & Beauty Suppliers Association) is working in conjunction with Denman International to introduce an innovative hairdressing scheme to paediatric neurosurgery theatres across the UK.

Children are provided with a high quality of care through the scheme in which nurses wash, condition, detangle and style the hair of their patients, whilst still under anaesthetic following neurosurgery. All hair products have been donated from major suppliers and include shampoos, conditioners, grips, pins, combs and brushes. These are all neatly stored in a trolley which is wheeled into the operating theatre and is then sanitised between operations.

Louis Byrne Inspires with Monday Motivation

Celebrity hairdresser Louis Byrne, founder of empowerment and identity movement ‘I Can I Am and I Will’ (ICIAIW), joined forces with Vicky McClure’s Dementia Choir on Monday 24 October, together they brought a heartening voice and positive identity message. The community centre exhibition popped up in the heart of Soho on the iconic Old Compton Street and was home to 18 hours of activities that touched hearts, minds and spirits. Louis commented: “This event was the culmination of my dream to bring wellness and hope to everyone but very specifically to meet a great need of those in the LBGTQIA+ communities too. Working with my great friend Vicky was the dream to bring together all of our voices in a very meaningful way.”

CALLS TO THE CHANCELLOR TO PROTECT THE HAIR AND BEAUTY SECTOR

The National Hair & Beauty Federation (NHBF) has urged the new Chancellor, the Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt MP, to adopt a sixpoint plan to protect the hair and beauty sector. The NHBF argues that hair and beauty is experiencing a ‘cost of doing business’ crisis, with energy and business costs escalating, inflation at 10% and consumer confidence falling. This is paired with a sector skills crisis undermining the ability of businesses to recruit both entry level apprentices and experienced staff. Commercial rents are also rising and businesses could pay more through business rates after revaluation in spring 2023. The six-point plan asks for:

1. Continued support on energy bills

2. Continued support on business rates

3. Nurturing the next generation of talent

4. Restraint on rises to National Minimum Wage and National Living Wage

5. A fairer tax system

6. Crackdown on tax evading businesses

Vish is Not Just for Christmas

The immediate revenue uplift of 15% generated by Vish has pushed the colour management technology to the top of many salon owners’ wishlists.

But as existing Vish customers have found, the tech is not just for Christmas and not just for colour. The boost to revenue continues long after the festive fun is over. No more costly toners forgotten off the client’s bill or 40 grams of unused pigment flushed down the sink.

As Karine Jackson has found, Vish also helps control costs for all treatments and chemical services and simplifies stock reordering. She says: “We dispense all treatments using Vish, including Olaplex, perming solutions, and straightening solutions, so we keep costs down and I know exactly how much is being used for every service, making restocking a total breeze.”
