BUSINESS BOOM
BUSINESS LIVE, SPONSORED BY THE NATIONAL HAIR & BEAUTY FEDERATION (NHBF) FEATURED 13 SESSIONS FULL OF INDUSTRY ICONS DISCUSSING THE TOPICS THAT MATTER MOST TO YOU. HERE’S JUST A PEEK AT WHAT WENT ON…
The Business Live stage at Salon International was a hub for likeminded individuals to come together and discuss key industry topics, from recruitment, retail, recession busting and more. A mix of familiar faces and emerging talent took to the stage in a bid to help visitors succeed in their own business endeavours, and here’s just some of the highlights HJ heard.
In 'How to Spend It', Colin McAndrew, Maddi Cook, Leah Durrant and Salv Mule were asked how they create the discipline needed to fluctuate between the creative side of hairdressing and the financial side of running a business, to which Leah shared the best business advice she has been given: "I was told to stop thinking of myself as an employee; you can still have fun and be creative, but remember that you're working on the business, not for it."
In ‘Who’s Got The Power’, Melenie Tudor, Phil Smith and Nick Tyrer sat down to discuss the art of negotiation. The panel were asked what the most important aspects are to look for before entering any contract or lease, to which Phil Smith advised the audience to allocate enough money to a good law firm to act on their behalf.
On day two, Erica Liburd, Rio Agor-Watts, Paige Lewin and Irene Shelly sat down in ‘Trends & Influences in the Hair Industry’ to discuss the importance of texture inclusivity. They discussed how now is the time to begin to act on promoting awareness for the inclusion of all hair types, with Erica commenting: “It’s only when you’re not included in something that you realise the problem.”
As Salon International began to draw to a close, Josh Goldsworthy, Janene Hawkins Bush and Jamie
Brooks sat down in 'Recession Busting' to share how they're currently managing their businesses in light of the current financial situation. Josh noted that hair services are often the last luxury people are willing to give up on, so salons should be capitalising on this by pushing treatments such as glosses and toners – lower cost services that encourage continuity.
In the final session, Kate Woods, Sara Mann and Fergal Doyle took turns imparting social media wisdom to the audience in ‘Digital Marketing 101’. Fergal said that utilising trending audios can boost the visibility of your reel, but Sara Mann urged that it's not always vital to use these audios. Instead, she emphasised the importance of maintaining a brand image, finding a personal vibe and using audios that align with this.
Insightful stuff.
