READY TO RELOCATE
We spoke to three hairdressers who moved to the UK to kickstart their career – they share their top tips on relocating
Nikita Fisher
I moved to the UK in 2010. Back then, people used British celebrities for hair references, and I didn’t know who they were at the time, so I’d recommend doing research on iconic hairstyles before arriving! It’s also always good to find your key musts before committing to a salon or location. Location is everything and I chose London – I worked at a salon in Oxford Street which was crazy busy. I soon realised I wanted to work in a smaller, family-run business. If you want to travel on the weekends, make sure you find a salon with flexible staff schedules, and if you’re looking for nightlife, a central salon or East London salon may suit you. But the best place to look is Instagram to really understand London salons.

I moved to London from Tasmania in 1989 as I had always admired British hairdressers and wanted to come and work with the best. We would always get our copy of Hairdressers Journal International a couple of months later than you get it in the UK, and I poured over every page. Both my bosses had worked in London and their experiences really inspired me. My grandmother was born in Cardiff, Wales which meant I could get an indefinite stay visa, I went travelling around Europe first and then settled in London. My first job was at Nicholas French in Surbiton and then after four months I moved to Charles Worthington London where I stayed for 25 years and I still have an incredible career, and have met some awesome people.

The moment I set foot in the UK; it was like stepping into a dream I never thought would come true. However, I found speaking English was a challenge, but I knew this was the place where I could refine my skills. I was determined so I studied English and embarked on a whirlwind of hairdressing courses with a clear goal – I wanted to be among the elite hairdressers. My motto became simple but powerful: “If an opportunity knocks, would you regret not opening the door?” If the answer was ‘yes’, I seized the moment, and those opportunities pushed me further out of my comfort zone, propelling me to new heights. So, my advice? Work hard but remember to always savour the journey.
