As Charles Worthington salons celebrate 35 years in business, HJ caught up with the man himself on his career and how he’s marking the momentous milestone

Where did it all start for Charles Worthington MBE?

I grew up in York with my parents, brother Robert and sister Jane and began studying architecture. However, after a couple of years realised that was not my destiny. I had always been fascinated by hair, so instead I followed my dream to become a hairdresser. I came down to London to do my training and my journey began. As soon as a picked up a pair of scissors, I knew it was the right career for me. Hair is architecture for the face, it’s all about form and shape.

Congratulations on 35 years in business! What’s in store for the anniversary?

I’m very proud of our team, my partner Allan and the business that we have built. We set the salons up during the eighties, so we’re having an eighties themed party for the team, and to play on the 35th anniversary, we’re selling client gift bundles for £35, and VIP passes for some clients who will receive a 35% discount. We have created a timeline of the history of the business to share with our clients, including combining our team’s 2022 Vision collection with our collection archives, merging them together to celebrate the 35 years.

What is the future of Charles Worthington Salons?

I can’t reveal too much about it yet, but we’re going to be using new technology which allows us to create a bespoke hair journey, allowing us to better share what we as professionals visualise for the client. It will be a world first and will drive our salons, and indeed the industry, into the digital age whilst continuing to maintain the personal communication and emotional connection with our clients.

What’s your golden piece of wisdom after 35 years in business?

Surround yourself with positive, like-minded people who share in your vision. Always follow your gut instinct, it’s usually right. Recognise that all businesses have highs and lows, but to always remember every negative has a positive and every problem has a solution, so stay focused and follow your dream. Not everything goes the way you planned, so it’s essential to stay flexible and open-minded to change and adapt to any situation.

What similarities does Charles Worthington the man share with the Charles Worthington Salons?

The salons are an extension of my life in every way, both in design and culture. My time spent training in architecture has allowed me to design the salons to ensure first and foremost that they are inviting and welcoming environments, the client journey is very important. I also like to feel my philosophy and personal values are instilled within my team – being kind as well as being creatively talented is very important.

You’ve won British Hairdresser of the Year twice in 1996 and 1998. How did it feel to win?

Winning the ultimate accolade of British Hairdresser of the Year the first time was a moment I shall always cherish. It’s a reward for so many months of hard work, effort, energy and creativity. The moment the winner is announced your mind explodes with emotion, relief and euphoria… and winning for a second time felt even better! It was a dream come true.
