VTCT ANNOUNCES BLACK HAIR AND SKIN AS PART OF CORE CURRICULUM
VTCT has initiated an overhaul of their qualification offering to ensure its learners have the knowledge to work within an inclusive and diverse society.
The awarding body, which offers qualifications globally, has pledged to ensure that black hair and skincare forms part of the core element of VTCT qualifications, making their qualifications inclusive and accessible.
In the UK, black hair and skincare is currently not part of the core curriculum, leaving learners lacking the essential skills required to treat a broad section of society.
These changes, initiated in September 2020, have been led by Chief Executive Alan Woods, OBE, and the organisation’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion advisory group.
“Meeting the needs of our learners has always been at the forefront of what we do at VTCT and we realised that there was more that needed to be done to improve the understanding of black hair and skin,” says Alan Woods OBE, “We are proud to be making a difference and have laid out our own strategy for change within our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Roadmap.”
NEW COURSE HELPS HAIRDRESSERS SPOT THE SIGNS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
A new domestic violence awareness salon-training course is launching in the UK and Ireland to help hairdressers, barbers and beauty therapists identify the signs of domestic violence on clients.
The anti-domestic violence salon training by Shear Haven – created by Nashville-based salon owner Susanne Post who is a survivor of domestic violence – recognises that hairdressers, barbers and beauty therapists have a unique relationship with their clients, and are in the perfect position to see and hear the signs of domestic violence.
Shear Haven’s Domestic Violence Training course, which originally launched in the US last year in partnership with Barbicide, consists of a 20-minute online session, followed by a short quiz, covering everything from how to recognise the signs of domestic violence and successfully navigate conversations with clients who may be in danger, to how to pass along tools that can help the client get to safety.

Design Essentials, manufactured by McBride Research Labs, Inc., has remained at the forefront of the industry catering to all hair textures including straight, wavy, curly and coiled. The International Division of the company covers the EMEA Region and this year became a Habia Recognised Brand Trainer, giving full support to their commitment to provide specialist training in the area of hairdressing for wavy, curly and coiled hair, encompassing all textures in order to help stylists deliver full services to their clientele, and tutors to be able to deliver classes in this area.
