Colour NOTES
Warren Edwards, Creative Director at Warren & The Hare, talks charging your worth, translating textures and tones, and the revival of 90s grunge!
What do you love most about being a colourist?
It’s all about being a total empath and building that beautiful, colourful bridge of human connection.
What do you ask in a colour consultation and why?
“How do you want to feel when you look in the mirror?” If we don’t get the feeling right, even a technically perfect colour can feel completely off.
What colour trends are you glad to see the back of?
Truthfully, I think there’s a time and place for everything – it’s all about the objective and the end result.
SOFT YET STATEMENT
Are there any colour trends you’d like to bring back?
Peekaboo colour placements. I can see this totally rocking the rising trend of micro fringes too!
What challenges are colourists facing right now?
I’m seeing too many colourists not charging their worth. With the pressure of rising costs, there’s a fear of losing clients, but if we don’t price our expertise and the cost of these premium products, we’re essentially subsidising the service ourselves.
What do you think will be the next big colour trend?
I can see the grungy 90s colour palette having a revival. Think muted dark green tones, dark plums and dark reds but being used in a modern placement!
PIGEON HAIR
What colour techniques are you best known for?
They don’t call me the ‘Hair Wizard’ for nothing! My clients bring me literal objects like a piece of fabric or flowers and ask me to recreate that ‘vibe’ on their hair. I’m best known for translating those real-world textures and tones into bespoke colour that you won’t find in a swatch book.
What colour creation makes you most proud?
I’m thrilled to be developing my debut BHA collection! These looks are a true dive into my identity as a colour artist, capturing exactly how I see hair and creativity. I’m counting down the days until I can share the final results!
What advice would you give to a trainee colourist?
Stay beautiful – be you to the full!
CALICO COLOUR
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt from being a colourist?
Realising that laying all your cards on the table, being brutally honest about what’s possible and what isn’t, is the best way to build real, unshakable trust with a client. It’s much better to lose a service because you were honest than to lose a client forever because you over promised and under delivered.
