The bustling streets of Battersea are not often described as calm and tranquil, but that’s exactly what you can expect inside KOOP Studio.

The epitome of minimalism, Brice Boidin and his team focused on 'the enhancement and celebration of natural beauty, individuality and art.' With the help of Enn Studio, Brice was tasked with transforming a Grade II listed Victorian building into a unique and contemporary salon. The rich history of the space became their first building block, “We wanted to embrace the curvatures of the window frames and expose the building’s masonry and steel structure.”

Whilst its charcoal grey exterior is in keeping with its urban environment, a step inside the studio reveals a neutral, minimalist space. Brice used raw unpainted plaster on the walls, drying to an earthy, pastel shade of pink. This primitive theme continues with bleached European oak floors, olive Takara Belmont Cadilla styling chairs and eucalyptus plants scattered through the space.

The bespoke mirrors are full-length and double-sided, standing independently in the space and positioned in the centre of the styling room. This feature breaks away from conventional salons and barbershops, as clients are faced outwards rather than toward the walls – echoing their artistic and empowering salon ethos. Brice and his team believe simplicity and attention to detail are vital in cultivating an excellent concept, service and environment.

The elevated studio lets sunlight from the large front window spill across the floor at a low level, illuminating the space without causing glare. Bright studio lighting throughout can be adjusted, dimmed and re-directed to optimise the light over the styling sections. The open-plan studio was designed in the spirit of creating privacy without enclosing the space, thanks to its three levels. Alongside this, chill sounds that play throughout the salon and natural smells curated by local artisans instantly 'temper any outside energy.'

The beating heart of the salon is their entrepreneurship and eagerness to support the talents of the hairdressing industry, “The studio is a platform for independent stylists to focus and perfect the essential elements of their service, whilst nurturing a bespoke client experience in an environment both fit for purpose and individual expression.”

Brice believes simplicity and attention to detail are vital in cultivating an excellent concept, service and environment.

Having worked with Enn Salon to design the space, Brice reflects, “Their approach to design is rich in materiality, refined in its detail and inspired by the unique context of the individual project." The result of both Brice and Enn Studio's work at KOOP certainly reflects this.

BRICE’S TOP TIPS

1 Work with trustworthy, local tradesmen This will save you time and money.

2 Have an identity Inspiration is always great, but make it your own.

3 Plan extra financing As the cost of construction and goods is always surprisingly more expensive than you think.
