SIMPLE WAYS TO BE MORE SUSTAINABLE IN THE SALON?

Jake Nugent, OSMO ambassador for the brand’s new vegan range X.POSED, shares five small changes that will add up to a big difference in the long-run

Think about the salon products you stock

Do the product ranges you stock consider the environment? Are they sustainable? Are they vegan? Is the packaging using recycled materials and can it be recycled easily? I’m starting my sustainable journey with the new OSMO X.POSED collection. It’s vegan with natural ingredients and even the packaging is made from post-consumer recycled materials. Like many of my fellow stylists, this is a new direction for me but something I believe we should all start to undertake. I’m excited to be using the X.POSED products – it’s a small range that caters to my clients’ hair care and blow-drying needs.

Consider your colouring techniques

Balayage is actually an eco-conscious treatment because it uses less foils. Other techniques like colour blocking, hand painting and melting are also eco-colouring techniques, so let’s keep pushing them with clients. Also, think about your foils afterwards and if they can’t be reused, how to dispose of them consciously. Don’t forget you can also recycle your colour cartons, chopped hair and plastic empties.

Educate your clients

Teach your clients how to do an eco-shampoo at home to prevent excessive water usage such as using a dry shampoo between washes or turning water off when using a treatment mask. Your clients could also consider turning the temperature down a little and even opting for plaits and wrapping hair whilst it dries naturally rather than using too much heat. All these steps can make a real difference. Remember all of these small actions will add up if lots of us are doing them.

Invest in an eco-friendly backwash shower head

Change to an eco-friendly backwash shower head and ensure you’re turning the tap off rather than leaving it to run the whole time. You could also make the switch to washing towels in the salon (not forgetting the eco-friendly washing powder) rather than using disposables. It’s almost like going back to basics but these simple switches will make a difference.

Consider your lighting in the salon

Have you thought about the lighting in your salon? Energy light bulbs, dimmer switches and motion sensors in rooms that aren’t used too often can make a real impact. Even looking at your utility suppliers will help to ensure you’re using green energy.
