A CULT CLASSIC
Brett MacDonald shares his journey to creating a salon that’s as much about atmosphere and connections as it is about incredible hair
Brett MacDonald began his career in Australia, training under Stelios Papas, before moving to London aged 21 to work at Vidal Sassoon. He later worked with SACO as UK Creative Director, and experienced incredible opportunities around the world, but admits: “I’d always wanted to create a salon where I can do great hair and be surrounded by fantastic people.” Enter: CULt Hairdressing.
BRETT’S TOP TIPS
1 Don't underestimate the power of ambience
Before we added music, the space felt very hollow.
2 Don’t dismiss small problems
It might not seem worth rectifying at the time but remember that this is a space you’ll be working in every day.
3 Prioritise practicality
If you can implement something that will make your job easier, do it.

“Modern, simple, elegant – a cult classic.” That’s how Brett describes the aesthetic of the salon, located a stone’s throw from Liverpool Street Station. Having worked with an interior designer for the project, he explains that he always had a general idea of the colour theme for the space: soft, dusty pastels. However, something that took more prominence than the colour scheme was the layout. The salon is subtly divided into different zones: the entry, the lounge area, the working space and the backwash. The same porcelain tile flooring runs throughout the premises however, the use of atmospheric lighting helps to establish each area’s unique purpose. Discussing the lounge in more detail, Brett notes this was inspired by a desire to form better connections with clients: “When I used to do some hair at home, I loved being able to sit on my couch and chat about their hair. People were more relaxed. Which allows you to see their personality.”
"When the salon is busy, the last thing you want is to compromise the client journey, so we’ve built everything to operate at a high level, and we’ve built it to last."
In addition to working with the design studio DEDRAFT, Brett and Maria (his co-founder and wife) also worked with Vialle&Co, who created bespoke joinery and shelving for the salon. “We worked closely, and having worked in many salons, I was able to provide them with a list of technical things needed for the space to function well,” Brett explains. This was a process not to be rushed, with Brett adding: “When the salon is busy, the last thing you want is to compromise the client journey, for example wheels falling off a trolley, so we’ve built everything to operate at a high level, and we’ve built it to last.” Brett’s personal life also had an impact on client considerations; as a father of two, he was keen to reflect his family values in the salon, with additions such as baby changing tables in the bathrooms.

In addition to his concern for the client journey, it was essential for the space to be comfortable for stafftoo. Small details can make a big impact. There are ironing boards and shoe racks available backof-house and air conditioning was also fitted throughout. A successful salon experience can be viewed as a holistic approach, where every detail is carefully considered. With an unwavering focus on quality, comfort, and functionality, Brett’s vision has come to life in a space that truly embodies his passion for great hair, great people and exceptional service.
