As we head into uncertain territory this April when the impact of the rising National Insurance contributions and the increase in the Minimum Wage will all hit, we’re conscious that everything we write at HJ has to be underpinned by what’s going to generate profit for you and your business.
Our colour features this month focus on services that are profitable, will inspire client loyalty and boost your bottom line. On page 39, Lighten Up looks at what you need to do to prep client’s hair for blonde, particularly in light of the skinification of colour. If clients are treating their hair like their skin, surely that’s a good sign for salons? The global skincare market is $115.65 billion (£9187 billion), so let’s harness some of that energy. Meanwhile, on page 43, our trending feature looks at blends, colour blocking and air touch balayage, amongst other colour techniques that will dominate 2025 – but also how to deliver a winning consultation. I love this tip from colourist Emmie Rae Bliss: “ask them when they felt most confident.”
If you’re not offering in-salon bonding services, why not? According to consumer trends analyst Spate, Google searches for hair bonding treatments increased by 36.5% year-over-year, and possibly the best thing – they take little to no time to do in the salon and produce instant results, just what the demanding client wants and needs. Why not consider having apprentices or junior members of staff become your bonding pros to allow them to contribute.
Elsewhere we’ve got our HJ Debate panel discussing whether uniforms in the salon have a place in 2025 and our HJ Voicenotes columnist Harry Andreou shares his career path from hairdresser to policeman, then back again! And don’t miss our New Wave spotlighting future talent in the industry (head to page30). It’s hard out there right now, whether you’re a junior or the top of the salon chain, so we want to spotlight the up-and-coming names in the industry and make sure they’re feeling the love. We have more in common than what divides us.
