ADVENTURES OF AN AMBITIOUS ACHIEVER
Demitri Deacon-Jones talks medical hair loss, finding his place in the industry, and seeing his work on the big screen
What has been your career journey so far?
Starting as an assistant, I worked my way up to a stylist and educator. I was fortunate to work alongside inspiring people who made me want to strive to achieve more. When I moved into session styling, I realised I had found what felt like a new challenge and new things to learn. After a few years, I missed the salon energy and being around other hairdressers, so I returned as a salon manager and loved coaching my teams to grow in their own directions. I have always been passionate about education so I booked myself onto some courses, and started to specialise in wigs and medical hair loss.
What do you do as EMEA Beauty Labs Manager at Dyson?
I oversee the training and development of new and existing Beauty Labs across the region. They are our own Blow Dry Bars in our stores – shoppers can book to have a blow dry, learn about technology and machines, and experience tools for themselves while asking questions and learning tips and tricks.
What are the challenges you’ve faced so far in your career?
Staying engaged and finding where I fit in the industry. I love the industry and I am hugely passionate about what we do and the impact we have on people, but after so many years I knew salon life wasn’t for me. I needed to be challenged, that's when I pursued session styling and loved it – but then I missed the salon buzz! When I was teaching, I was my happiest and I felt that I had found my place, but once I moved to Dyson, I realised I finally had all three areas I loved in one role. I got to be creative in my job and teach, as well as lead a team of talented and inspiring individuals across different countries.
What are you most proud of in your career?
Seeing my work in magazines, on the cinema screen, and working on exciting new releases have all been unique experiences and proud moments. Ultimately, it has been working with people going through hair loss and being able to play a small part in rebuilding their confidence and helping them to feel like themselves again – that has been the most rewarding time in my career.
What’s next for Demitri?
I will always be a learner and want to achieve more. I love my current role and see myself growing more, working with other teams to collaborate, being the bridge between hairdressers, technology and innovation.
