ADVENTURES OF AN AFRO HAIR SPECIALIST

From starting her career in her aunt’s basement salon to working on Beyoncé’s tour, Michelle Sultan journeys us through her career adventures of an

What has been your career journey so far?

My career started at a really early age. I used to go to my aunt's in America who had a salon in the basement of her house – it was tiny with just two seats. I used to wash hair and sweep the floor. Women came in with their confidence on the floor and were completely transformed, and I wanted to be part of that. So, I went to Kingston College to get my qualification and began apprenticeships in salons. I worked at Cobella, and then in 1998/1999 I went to work at the salon where I am now, and I’ve been there ever since.

What was your big break?

I’ve always worked hard, and I’d like to say you get rewards rather than breaks. One day I was working on a client in the salon, and she said to me: “I’m going to be in a girl band, we’re doing a shoot, will you be part of it?” I said absolutely, and that girl band ended up being Mis-Teeq. I then started working within TV and the music industry, and I found my career. We were asked to do the European Leg of Beyoncé’s tour. I sat with my friend due for takeoff on a private jet, and I remember thinking ‘what is going on?’ It’s moments like that where I think ‘okay, I’m doing good’.

What are the challenges you’ve faced so far in your career?

Personal challenges present themselves in terms of work/life balance. In terms of career challenges, there have sadly been times where I’ve been overlooked for another hairstylist who has been white. But with that being said, I think things are changing.

What are you most proud of in your career?

One of the most magical moments was winning Afro Hairdresser of the Year Award at the British Hairdressing Awards. It was such an exciting time being recognised in front of people that we’d looked up to for years and I felt like we represented our peers and other black hairstylists.

Do you have any advice for someone who aspires to have a career like yours?

It takes 100% dedication. It’s not a job that you can put half of your effort into – you have to be switched on all the time, but it’s one of the best jobs in the world.

What’s next for Michelle?

Being a BaByliss PRO Ambassador has been tremendous. They’re a lovely company and make everything so easy. I want to work more internally to develop even more products for Afro hair. Representing myself and Afro hairdressers with big brands really is a dream come true.
