What a jam-packed issue! HJ had the privilege of joining both the Revlon Pro Summit in Palma and Wella Destination in Gran Canaria, read all about the events in our HJ Reports section from page 22. Meanwhile, in our features section we focus on colour and education, because let’s face it without either, our industry wouldn’t survive. We take a deep dive into the reasons clients aren’t colouring their hair in our Colour Special this issue, taking into account the very real effect the cost of living crisis has had on colour services. On page 39 we fight back against clients’ common reasons for not choosing colour, from worries about finances to concerns about damage – these are the comebacks you need to keep clients coming through your doors. We also explored the inter-generational differences when it comes to colour – are Gen Z really a different breed of client to Gen X? We find out on page 47…
Our education feature emphasises what an integral part of our industry education is – it plays a crucial role at every stage of a hairdressing career. Whether it’s inspiration to elevate your everyday behind-thechair looks or a chance to re-learn the fundamentals, it’s crucial to our industry’s survival that you never stop being hungry for knowledge. Complacency has no place in hairdressing, because clients will go elsewhere, or even worse – turn to box dye. One woman who is a huge advocate for education is Carolyn Newman, who has been educating for over 30 years. She is this month’s HJ Voicenotes columnist, and she shares her opinion on social media educators and their place in the industry, as well as how to choose the right educator for you.
Elsewhere, Jamie Stevens breaks his silence on a turbulent few years that’s seen him downsizing to one flagship salon in Kensington on page 21. He shares the power of the hairdressing community – and not bottling everything up. It was a pleasure to sit down with Michelle Sultan for our Careers interview this month and find out about her journey from working in her aunt’s salon, to becoming presenter Alison Hammond’s right-hand woman. I think it’s fair to say this issue of HJ perfectly encapsulates what a varied and enriching career hairdressing can be.
