Client expectations – those two words are often cited as one of the main challenges facing hairdressers today.Social media has been both a blessing and a curse for the industry. A blessing in that it drives clients through your doors, but a curse because their expectations can be wildly warped. With summer months coming up (hello, blonde season), colourists are under pressure to deliver the “instant transformations” our clients see on TikTok and Instagram. We asked the experts on page 28 for their hot takes on managing expectations. Thankfully there’s so many colour techniques and shades clients can try on in 2022, without the commitment so get inspired by our feature about summer colour flings, from page 32.
Elsewhere we cover the case for state registration (page 17) and this month’s The Debate is all about offering non-hair services in your salon. Would you offer a beauty-focused retail area or even a barista bar? What do you think: focus on one thing, or cast your net wider? It all comes down to what your business plan is. And on that note, don’t miss out on bagging yourself a ticket for the British Hairdressing Business Awards on Monday 4 July. It's a night where we celebrate the best business minds in the industry. Plus, deadlines are looming for British Hairdressing Awards, sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional (entries close on 1 July).
And finally, indulge me for a second… It’s always been an ambition of mine to write an Ed’s Letter on an aeroplane – and now I have! I’m writing this as I fly to Eurovision in Turin, courtesy of Eurovision presenting partners Moroccanoil. You can find out all the backstage hair styling action in the next print issue of HJ. Ciao for now!
