Education: TIKTOK VS TRADITION

Does formal, in-person education still play an essential role in education or has ease of access, cost and convenience positioned social platforms as the educators of the future?

For many seasoned stylists, learning inside the salon remains the foundation of true skill. But for a new generation raised on social media, education can now look very different. As Schwarzkopf Professional Ambassador Tim Scott-Wright notes: “Education has become so much more obtainable at the touch of a button – whether it’s shorter courses, longer programmes, or simple how-to videos.”

This accessibility has inspired new stylists to learn quickly and creatively online. Yet Daniel Rice, owner at Daniel’s Chelsea, reminds us: “Working hands-on in a salon gives you a tactile experience you can’t get through a screen.” The future of education lies in blending digital learning with real-world practice.

How Different Generations Learn and Why It Matters?

“Younger stylists learn fast and absorb trends instantly. Older stylists take a slower, more technical approach. The challenge is that each group often undervalues the other,” explains Elle Foreman from Tribe Clapham. “Experience can resist change, and youth can overlook depth. The best teams share knowledge both ways. When speed meets skill, the results are far better than either alone.”

In terms of increased accessibility in the industry for younger generations Victoria Lynch Managing Director of Additional Lengths and creator of Remi Cachet, puts it simply: “I think that past generations have found it hard to ring fence the time and the funds to access learning and subsequent generations have more opportunities and prioritise learning as part of their career. There are so many sources – a tip from Tik Tok, a video from YouTube, an in-person class at Salon International – it’s a feast of learning opportunities now.”

How to Stay Current Amid Constant Trends and Digital Shifts

Most stylists agree that whilst online education and evolving trends are invaluable, they need to be balanced with real-world experience and hands-on practice, both for emerging talent and experienced professionals. As Daniel explains, “No matter how trends change, it always comes back to attitude, aptitude, and ability. Keep your standards high, stay curious, and never stop refining your craft.”

For Elle, collaboration and continuous learning are key. “Trends come and go. Most people chase what’s new, but I’d rather master something timeless.”

Tim also recognises the enduring importance of formal education while celebrating learning from the younger generations as well. “I love working with the younger members of my team, watching them work and do things that come naturally to them educates me continuously.”

However, Victoria offers a word of caution for emerging stylists. “It’s tough for younger stylists to recognise the importance of in-person education, and some rely too heavily on digital resources. This can affect both their skill quality and how they deliver services to clients. I believe every learning journey should be underpinned by in-person sessions, where individuals can be guided and supported according to their own needs.”
