HAIR: THE L’ORÉAL COLOUR TROPHY 2024 WINNERS
MAKE-UP: LAN NGUYEN-GREALIS
PHOTOGRAPHY: JACK EAMES

Our October issue is the HJ equivalent of Vogue's September issue - it's a bumper edition (although with a bit less couture, we’re not going to lie!). Instead it's packed full of the latest news, freshest features, and inspiring collections that will shake you out of any creative funk and help you brush up on your business knowledge.

But onto the content inside! In our feature 'Changing Rooms' we looked at the rise of the co-working salon and what it means for our industry. A take on a traditional salon set up, but with independent stylists working within, it’s easy to see why they’re so appealing… and why they can be divisive. For our dedicated annual Freelance feature in celebration of HJ’s Freelance Week (21-25 Oct), we spoke to freelancers and co-working spaces to find out their thoughts on page 43. It was interesting to speak to Samantha Cusick in our Voicenotes this month to talk about how she balances her new co-working space alongside her traditional salons. Can the two co-exist? See what she has to say on page 18.

We also heard from salon group Haringtons, who are celebrating 40 years in business, on what their tips for longevity are, and HJ’s Jayne Lewis-Orr flew to Frankfurt to inter view the President of John Paul Mitchell Systems, Jason Yates. A whirlwind month!

In our Christmas Special we took a deep dive into how to sell Christmas (when to start, hint: now!, what to stock and how to oh-so-subtly retail gifts) and created a pretty cool gifting decision tree that will match your client’s hair concerns with the perfect present for them, their friends and their family.

Elsewhere we went behind the scenes of the L’Oréal Colour Trophy Shoot, the results of which are on this cover! A huge congratulations to all the winners, it was a fabulous day meeting everyone and seeing all their hard work result in gorgeous images, now immortalised on the cover of Hairdressers Journal International.

We can’t wait to see you on 12-14 October at ExCeL London for Salon International. If you haven’t already, get your tickets and check out our guide from page 55. We’ve got some new features this year that we can’t wait to show you…
