MOMENT IN TIME

Our new series looks at one iconic image and the story behind it. The first comes courtesy of Guest Editor Cos Sakkas and late, great photographer Stuart Weston

“This was the first collaboration style shoot of its time. It was more than just a hair shoot. It was experimental and instantaneous with a collective group of minds that put it all together, headed by Sacha Mascolo-Tarbuck who was Global Creative Director of TONI&GUY at the time.

This image was shot by famed photographer, Stuart Weston, in an emerging area in London that was bubbling behind the scenes with creatives. From the outside, the studio looked like a standard three-story terraced home, but as soon as you walked in, it was a huge open plan, live-in/work studio – I’d never seen anything like it, it was even the first time I’d seen a corner sofa.

The studio was per fect, as it had everything we could possibly need all in one place. This style of shooting was completely new to the hair industry, it allowed us to do everything from pre- to postproduction all in one day. Everything was done there and then, including adding the background prints. There was no need for retouching and it was such a vibe. Stuart was a true visionary and it was so inspirational seeing everything in one place. It let us be reactive at the time of shooting – rather than in post-production or weeks later.

If a thought came to mind, we had the capabilities to make it happen instantly – this was the exciting bit and we left with the final images. It was our version of Andy Warhol’s factory. It was our moment in time.”
