INSPIRING CREATIVE EXPRESSION BEYOND HAIR DYE!

Sophia Hilton spills the tea on how your salon CAN make money from creative colours

What is happening in the market right now?

For as long as I can remember I’ve heard of salon owners not letting stylists use creative or vivid colours because they can’t afford the product. That was before the recent increase in the price of products. And they are right, using various vivid colours on the market and the cost means that most standard salons can’t make minimum wage after their costs.

That is why we choose Crazy Color.

How do you choose the brands you work with?

Firstly, I have to make sure that the brand is good quality. If I don’t produce quality work, my customer is not going to come back. Secondly, I have to consider price. That’s why I started working with Crazy Color 10 years ago. I knew I could get consistent results, but I also knew that I would be able to pay my team well.

How do you think salons are doing right now?

It’s a really tough time. 43% of our industry are only just breaking even and there is 20% not making any profit at all! Right now, more than ever, money matters.

How important do you think creativity is to hairdressers in 2023?

With a huge percentage of people not earning what they did before, creativity is so important. People need to enjoy what they do. Whether we like to admit it or not, our jobs can become mundane and doing colourful work, as we do at Not Another Salon, can really rejuvenate an uninspired stylist. Learning to use Crazy Color is enough to push us out of our comfort zone, make us feel creative and satisfy our need for growth.

Why did you choose to work with Crazy Color?

Honestly, I just wanted to get us noticed. When I started using Crazy Color, vivid colour still had a feeling of being alternative but now, through Not Another Academy, we have educated enough stylists across the country to make vivid colour commercial. It’s no longer just alternative kids or people going through midlife crisis that have pink hair. It's become the new normal. In 2023, I’m not sure your business would be as profitable as it could be IF you limit your palette to natural colours only. The market HAS changed.
