ADVENTURES OF A CURIOUS CREATIVE
Four times British Hairdresser of the Year, Angelo Seminara, reveals how his curiosity has led the journey of his career
What has been your career journey so far?
One day, after living a beautiful childhood in the South of Italy, my grandmother suggested I try barbering after school. From that day, I went to a barbershop for three years. I then moved to Rome, and started teaching in a TONI&GUY academy before going on to do some courses with Vidal Sassoon, but I soon learnt I couldn’t work with the methods I was being taught; it wasn’t my feeling. I create my own techniques – this has brought me to where I am today.
Where do you draw your inspiration from?
Everyday life. Mother Nature is my biggest mentor and teacher, and my curiosity is my feeling. I’m a curious person, I want to learn, I want to know about everything, this is what makes me who I am.
What has been your proudest moment during your career?
Sharing the stage with Jayne Lewis-Orr at the British Hairdressing Awards four times. Having that platform – which is probably the most original and authentic platform in terms of hair awards – has stimulated me and pushed me. You have to develop your own originality and it’s such a proud moment to win.
What has been the biggest challenge during your career?
Juggling business, family, friends, and new contacts. Sometimes you find you care more about what you’re doing than looking after yourself. One of the most precious things we have is time – and time is ticking. Use it well.
What advice would you give to someone who aspires to have a career like yours?
Never give up at the first hurdle and do your calculations right – why should you be a hairdresser? You’ll meet a lot of interesting people, and will be able to travel the world. You can also make a lot of money if you’re clever in business and expand your knowledge. There are so many things to consider, I like to go to the roots – why should you do it? Being a hairdresser today is not about being stuck in the salon, it’s about moving around.
What’s next for Angelo?
I’m excited to prepare my new collection and create my new film. I’m also preparing my show for the Kao Salon Global Experience in Chicago. I’m happy I have some meetings with Goldwell about new projects we’re going to do together in the future – it’s really exciting and I’m motivated to get stuck in.
