A new community-focused award is being set up in late barber Sam Wall’s honour by mental health charity Lions Barber Collective. The Sam Wall Award will be given to barbers who have carried out incredible work to help their community.

“We wanted Sam’s memory to live on and ensure his name is always connected with people who are doing amazing work for their community – just like he did,” says Lions Barber Collective founder Tom Chapman.

Entrants must be nominated for the award, rather than entering themselves. The winner will receive a stunning, handmade championship belt and will be crowned at an awards ceremony expected to happen towards the end of 2021. “We wanted to create something different so that’s where the idea of the championship belt came from,” explains Tom. “It’s been a real labour of love and the winner will keep the belt even after their year is up.”

Following the news that Pantone’s Colors of the Year 2021 are Ultimate Gray and Illuminating (pictured right), Jim Shaw, owner of TONI&GUY Billericay and Tracy Hayes, global colour ambassador at Fudge Professional share their thoughts on the must-have shades for male clients.

JIM PREDICTS: ASHY, SMOKEY GREYS AND PLATINUM 
These colours are great for men who want to give their style a fashion-led look. For those who like a more stand-out shade, platinums and smokey greys are a great choice. However, for those who don’t want anything too dramatic, a subtle ashy grey tone is ideal and will complement a client’s cut and provide a trendy finish.

JIM PREDICTS: PASTEL TONES 
Illuminating yellow is the Pantone Color of the Year 2021, however I expect orange and peach tones will make a reappearance during Spring, along with pastel tones of lilac and pink. These are great for blondes who want to add a bit of colour and warmth to their look, but these shades are not for the fainthearted.

TRACY PREDICTS: NATURAL GREY 
Many gents want to look distinguished when they are starting to go grey, especially around the hairline and temples. The perfect quick technique is to comb very fine brush strokes in their original hair colour. The secret to making it appear natural is keeping the tone as flat as possible.

HJ’s British Hairdressing Awards, sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional 2020 was an extra special night for Terri Kay and Andrea Giles at Mark Leeson. The duo won the Men’s Hairdresser of the Year category for the third time, which means they are now in the British Hairdressing Awards Hall of Fame.

Terri now holds three Hall of Fame wins in the Eastern, Artistic Team of the Year and Men’s Hairdresser of the Year categories.

She has worked for Mark Leeson for 18 years and she is manager at the Mark Leeson flagship salon in Mansfield. She told HJ exclusively: “It was a fabulous end to 2020 for me and the team – it’s been incredible. I’ve never been one to forage for fame, but to be recognised for our creative work in this way is so rewarding – it’s the icing on the ca ke!“
