ASK THE EXPERTS WITH KY WILSON

Making curls and waves look balanced on both sides, but not too ‘done’. Remember the sides should look like sisters, not twins

Ky says: A question I always get asked is how do you make curls or waves look mirrored at the front? A lot of stylists tell me that they can always do one side but struggle with the other, so let me show you how…

1 THE MAIN THING IS TO PRACTICE STYLING WITH BOTH HANDS. PRACTICE WITH YOUR WEAKEST HAND AS MUCH AS YOU CAN SO IT BECOMES SECOND NATURE.

2 TO MAKE THE STILISTA WAVES LOOK NATURAL AND FLUID, BE QUITE QUICK WITH YOUR MOVEMENTS TO PREVENT IT LOOKING TOO OVERDONE.

3 BUILDING MUSCLE MEMORY TAKES TIME AND PATIENCE, SO PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.

The Technique

Using the BaByliss PRO Stilista, start on the right side of the model’s head. Take the Stilista in your left hand, starting at the back. Insert it at a slight angle pointing downward, making sure it’s positioned where you want the first bend. Rotate the Stilista (the more you rotate it, the more bend you’ll achieve) and then glide it down fairly quickly for a more relaxed feel. Repeat this process on the other side, but switch the Stilista to your right hand for the left side of the model.

Using a tong is slightly different. For the left side, take the tong in your left hand, point it at an upward angle, and place the tong under the hair where you want the first bend to be. Pull the hair around and use the clamp to hold it in place. Twist the hair at the end of the tong and turn the tong until the hair is flush against the barrel, then pull down slightly.

Continue twisting, turning and pulling down; the more you twist, the more textured the look will be. Repeat the process on the right side using your right hand for the tong. It’s very important to practice using both hands when styling.
