As our coverline suggests clients are talking about glossing in a big way. If you’re not offering the service, why not? With frequency of hair appointments in decline according to reports from L’Oréal Professionnel Paris, it could be just what you need to get more bums on seats and keep clients returning more regularly. Think of glossing like a hybrid service, adding smoothness, a touch of colour (if desired) and crucially giving clients that glass-like shine that everyone is coveting in 2024.

Elsewhere we enjoyed exploring the ways in which education has changed since the pandemic. Yes there is a focus on virtual education, but nothing beats IRL learning does it?! There’s a new crop of smaller, more mental-health focused education offerings popping up (hairdresser-only retreats anyone?) that we explore on page 41.

We had a blast talking to businesses who had diversified their offering and added beauty treatments to their service menu. Read our feature It All Adds Up on page 25 to see how much you could add on to your average bill with facials, manicures and even ear piercings. Who wouldn’t want a mani/pedi while their colour is developing? And what business wouldn’t want an extra £100 or so in the till…

Last month we hopped around Europe, hitting up Portugal and The Netherlands to name a few, to join Revlon Professional and JOICO respectively for creative shows, demonstrations and networking with the industry. Back in Blighty, we’ve talked to session stylist and groomer Joe Mills who gets real about payment, credits and collaboration in our Voicenotes column this month, we spoke to salon managers and owners to find out how they recruit in 2024 and got the inside scoop on Richard Ashforth’s career to date.

And, I’d love to add some dates to your diary: HJ's British Hairdressing Awards, sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional, deadline is 5pm, Friday 28 June, and tickets are on sale for both Salon International (12-14 October) and the British Hairdressing Business Awards (1July). Hope to see you on Monday 1st at Westminster Park Plaza for #BHBA24. Good luck to everyone on the night!
