ALL IN THIS TOGETHER
HJ spoke to Hooker & Young’s Gary and Michael as they explained the important roles that respect, unity and originality play in their award-winning art team
► Can you share the journey of how Hooker & Young's award-winning art team came into existence? What inspired its creation?
We’ve always had an Art Team, although early on it was mostly Gary and I. However, this allowed younger team members to travel with us, gain experience and open their minds to a creative world. We’ve always nurtured talent and encouraged exploring the industry’s artistic side.
► What qualities do you look for when selecting individuals to be part of your art team, and how do you nurture their talents?
Passion and eagerness catch our eye first and we give the opportunity for people at all levels to shine. Each of our team have different strengths and skills, but this complements each other like a well-oiled machine; each an integral part needed for the engine to run smoothly.
► Award-winning teams often have a unique synergy. Could you describe the dynamic within your art team and how it contributes to your success?
We all respect each other, we know what we individually bring and what being part of a team means. There are no egos or competition, it’s a great dynamic.
► Artistry in hairdressing is a continuous evolution. How do you keep your team motivated and inspired to push the boundaries of creativity?
The team work individually with education and new courses which keeps creativity fresh and relevant. For collaborative projects, we work collectively so everyone can share their input. I may have an initial idea and work with Gary before sharing with the team, but we will develop or change the idea until we’re all excited about it.
► Winning awards is a significant achievement. Could you tell us about some of the most memorable moments and awards your art team has received?
That’s hard! In addition to trips for shows throughout Europe, the U.S.A and Australia, the high points are definitely when each of the team have won their British Hairdressing Awards, sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional. Nothing’s better than seeing your team achieve their goals, it’s such a proud moment. Of course, winning Artistic Team of The Year in 2022 was also so special for us.
► Collaboration is key, how do you encourage your team members to collaborate and bring diverse ideas to the table?
It really comes down to good communication, being open-minded, compromising and sharing ideas with like-minded people.
► Could you share some behind-the-scenes insights into the creative process of your awardwinning collections? How do you develop and execute your concepts?
It comes back to everyone’s different strengths. The team begin by doing things like sketching, trying out hair ideas and gathering suitable imagery. Then, we build the looks into the story. A lot of the ‘Stealth’ 2022 collection has an architectural feel, the hair needed to feel constructed for its strong silhouette.
► How do you stay ahead of industry trends and maintain a fresh perspective on hairstyling?
No project ever looks the same. We don’t make a conscious effort to do this, it happens naturally as we create fresh, exciting work. Once we’re all onboard with a concept, the rest falls into place. Even if we’re working on a commercial shoot, we want it to reflect what we love in that moment.
► Artistry often reflects personal growth. How have the members of your art team evolved since joining the team?
Being around like-minded people is always good, it breeds positivity and drives you to be your best. As well as all being British Hairdressing Award winners, their roles here are exemplary and they’re all role models for the next generation.
► What advice would you give to hairstylists who aspire to be part of an award-winning art team?
Surround yourself with positive people who challenge you to be your best, leave egos at the door. Also, choose an exciting team where you see yourself belonging.
