WELCOME
We’ve been doing a lot of looking back this issue as Salon International celebrates its 50th anniversary this month. We headed to our magazine archives, which are kept at the British Library in London's Kings Cross to look at the coverage of the long-running hair exhibition over the years. We loved flicking through the magazines from the 70s and 80s – the styles, the names, the trends and the most unusual of adverts...
Some of you might be reading this issue at Salon International, which will be running from Saturday14 -Monday 16 October, so head to pages 51-70 to find out what to see and what to do (and to see some of the awesome pictures from vintage HJ magazines). Team HJ are really looking forward to seeing you there, and introducing you to our new Artist Spotlight stage, which is all about heroing the rising stars of our industry.
Elsewhere in the issue, we spoke to leading freelancers about the questions you need to ask yourself before taking the plunge into self-employment. There’s been an undeniable rise in the freelance market since the pandemic, however what we’re starting to notice in our Insider Surveys is a rise in the number of hairdressers who are working both on a freelance and an employed basis. If you’re thinking of going fully freelance, or just dipping your toe, read our feature on page 25 first. Meanwhile Clive Collins, Director at HOB, explains why now is the time to raise your prices, Gary Hooker & Michael Young chat about the power of an art team and up and coming stylist Roman Sys talks getting creative on a budget.
Finally, love it or loathe it, Christmas means cash (most likely contactless payments now), so we’ve got the best gifts to stock on your shelves. Oh and it's a bumper issue for fashion collections, some of which are entries to the British Hairdressing Awards, sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional! Don’t forget to get your tickets for the best night in hairdressing, there's not long to go now...
