HJ REPORTS: DAVINES HAIR ON STAGE IN PARIS
More than 1200 hairstylists from 35 countries came together in the French capital Paris to explore new trends and sustainable highlights for the Davines 2023 Hair on Stage
Hair on Stage, the Davines international globetrotting event, offers a unique opportunity to watch Davines stylists and some of the best names in the industry showcase their creative talent.
From June 11-12, hairstylists gathered in Paris to get the low down on new hair trends direct from the Davines hair gurus. This year sees the company celebrating their 40th anniversary, and the opening of the new French offices right in the heart of Paris.
The programme was jam-packed – awelcome cruise and dinner on the River Seine opened the event on June 11, with a hair show the following day at the Theatre du Chatelet and the finale event at the Chalet du Lac followed by a party in pure Davines style.
YOU ARE THAT – The Creative Concept
The common thread intertwining all the shows was “You Are That”, a phrase inspired by Sanscrit literature. A deep message of uniqueness and appreciation for diversity, each Davines hairstylist brought onstage their individual interpretations of this concept underlining the importance of human and cultural diversities.
THE HAIR SHOWS
“A pile of not so little things”
TOM CONNELL
A Pile of Not So Little Things
The Davines Hair Art Director compiled four very different and unique chapters through a cinematic shoot.
Chapter 1: Ideas on North 11th Street
Inspired by New York, the main look featured a disconnection: a fairly traditional short cut with a panel of long hair taken asymmetrically from the centre parting across the head that was finally closed one way at the back with a knot.
Chapter 2: With the band
In this chapter we saw coloured hair bands decorated with stripes or patterns. Tom had been working on these hair bands for a few years, collaborating with fashion designers and fabric patterns that he then replicated on the hair.
Chapter 3: Échantillons de coleur
Two strong looks with pastel-coloured hair: a light blue and a pink mixed with the model’s natural colour to create something that was bright but earthy.
Chapter 4: Mono-chrome domes
In the final chapter, Tom presented very long, exaggerated black braids, that were intricately staggered between red sections of the natural hair. The red hair was then cut in a shaggy texture, while the black braids disconnected each section, showing a mixture of haircuts and hairdressing.
AllilON's Perception
The “Sonder” collection
CANDICE MCKAY
A beacon of hope and optimism, a celebration of life, and a testament to the human spirit, Candice’s collection showed that every person carries with them unique stories. Created to inspire clients with its wearability, and give simplicity for hairdressers to replicate, this collection illustrated 90’s inspired cuts with rich, earthy colour tones.
Perception
ALLILON
The UK duo presented their latest collection based on neuroscience called Perception. This concept was based on the neurons that lead our thoughts and emotions, which drive our actions and dictate our future. AllilON’s collection aimed to influence our perceptions through colours with dynamic, abstract and impactful hairstyles.
Dark Light
RICHARD JORDAN & MARRIET GAKES
A new collection presented by the Dutch stylist duo played on an oxymoron: light is born from the original darkness, and without light there would be no colour or life. Through style, cut and colour the duo showed a stark contrast between each look.
Punkadour, France
DAVINES ARTISTIC TEAM
Wilfrid Karloff, Vincent Moutault, Katia Prou, Edoardo Seghi and Philippe Tapprest supported by the colourist Justine Garel, presented their collaborative collection Punkadour. A fusion inspired by Madame de Pompadour and Vivienne Westwood that exuded Punk and French culture.
