We pay tribute to Jacki Wadeson, who sadly died in February 2023 at the age of 75.

HAIRDRESSERS JOURNAL INTERNATIONAL EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR JAYNE LEWIS - ORR REFLECTED:

“IT IS SO SAD TO HEAR OF THE PASSING OF JACKI WADESON, A TRULY LOVELY LADY WHO, AS EDITOR OF HAIR & BEAUTY MAGAZINE, LAUNCHED THE BRITISH HAIRDRESSING AWARDS IN 1984. A SUCCESSFUL CAREER IN PR FOLLOWED, BUT SHE WILL BE REMEMBERED BY SO MANY FOR BEING A GREAT FRIEND, WHOSE PASSION FOR HAIRDRESSING NEVER WANED.”

Industry Unites to Help Clarify HMRC Guidelines

Key industry organisations came together in February to discuss industry challenges, including the current HMRC guidelines that are used to determine the trading status of a hairdressing business, or more specifically if that business is a chair rental / selfemployed model. Representatives from The Hair and Barber Council, The National Hair & Beauty Federation, The British Beauty Council, The Freelance Hairdressers Association, The Fellowship for British Hairdressing, The Salon Employers Association and The Mens Hairdressing Federation (MHFed) have all agreed to actively share the HMRC guidelines to their members. Following this, they will create the biggest-ever survey of the hairdressing industry, with the aim of understanding how the industry feels about these guidelines, as well as other issues. Scan the QR Code above to read the guidelines for yourself, and have your say in the survey released later this month.

Are You Throwing Away £15k?

Colour waste is costing the average salon nearly £15,000 every year, as unused product is washed down the sink or thrown in the bin, according to stats collected by hair colour management software, Vish. “The industry throws away 6.8 million kg of colour each year. That’s not just bad for the environment, that’s bad for those salons paying for all that colour wasted,” says Joshua Howard, Founder and CEO of Vish. “It represents millions in unnecessary costs and explains why so many salons struggle to make profit with colour. When stylists stop over-mixing and Vish captures every gram of colour or product dispensed, salons see an immediate uplift in revenue and profit.”

The colour tech innovator measured waste from millions of formulas mixed by stylists just as they started using Vish to weigh colour and reweigh waste. The average stylist had £1.19-worth of colour left over after application, which, for the average salon, adds up to £14,302 wasted every year. By the time the client is on their third visit and Vish has been able to recalibrate the stylist’s formula fully, this was down to practically zero, guaranteeing a more sustainable and profitable future for the stylist and their salon.
