INSPIRATION

Life Through a Lens

Martin Crean

Salon owner at MODE Hair and the current Artistic Team of the Year winner at HJ's British Hairdressing Awards, sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional, shares eight of his all-time favourite creations

“The Wolf was inspired by a Sally Brooks image where the focus was totally on the hair. I wanted to push texture to its limit so I crimped the hair and cut it into a shape.”

“I got a front cover with this image which was one of the proudest moments of my career. It is so simple – a great colour, a stunning face and nothing else."

“I enjoy working on location and we worked throughout the night to get this look on the beach. Undercuts were hot at the time and I wanted to create an edgy but glam look.”

“This is the first time I included Afro hair in a collection. I believe it’s important to show how diverse we are as hairdressers. This is from my 2015 Wales & South West collection at HJ’s British Hairdressing Awards, sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional, and I love the contrast of the skin colour rocking out blonde curls."

“This is from my first winning Wales & South West Hairdresser of the Year collection at HJ’s British Hairdressing Awards, sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional, in 2014. I love the heavy styling in this image. The stencilling through the side softens the look, which is opulent, and has a Bridgerton feel to it!”

“This was the first time I shot on location. We used every corner of this house. The model knew how to work the camera. For this shot, she jumped onto a window ledge, quickly got the lighting on her and Richard Miles shot it. It’s raw and powerful and one of my all-time favourite images.”

“I worked with my photographer Richard Miles to create a backdrop using fresh flowers and plants. I wanted the images to be full length rather than cropped to create a fashion image rather than just a hair image. This was the most expensive shoot I have ever done.”

“This is from my 2019 winning collection at HJ’s British Hairdressing Awards, sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional, and is one of the images that took me into the Hall of Fame. I wanted to do something a bit different and had never really seen tapestry in the hair. We wanted to show how hair is a fabric and it took me weeks to create those pieces, but it was worth it.”
