Welcome to the June issue – and to a new face. Having been head of editorial across HJ’s sister titles Professional Beauty and Aesthetic Medicine for more than 10 years, I’m so excited to now be working with the HJ team and brand too, and over the past month putting this issue together, I’ve been reminded why hairdressers are some of the most driven, creative and resilient people out there. The industry feels busy in the best way right now. Everyone seems to be learning something new, launching something new, or reinventing something – and this issue reflects that energy.

Our colour feature from page 38 explores why brunette is becoming the shade of the season, and the techniques colourists are using to create depth and dimension while still keeping hair looking healthy. There’s a real shift away from high-maintenance blonding and towards colour that feels softer, more wearable and lower maintenance for clients, but still premium.

Education is another huge focus in this issue, particularly the growing role social media now plays in the way hairdressers learn. Whether it’s a cutting technique saved from Instagram or colour advice picked up on TikTok, social media has become part of the industry’s education landscape. But as our education feature on page 22 explores, many educators are now questioning where short-form learning fits into professional training.

That conversation around career development also runs through this month’s HJ Debate (page 14), where we ask whether salon success really depends on location. The responses from salon owners across Cornwall, Wales and Scotland are a reminder that while geography can shape opportunities, passion, consistency and putting yourself out there still count for a lot in this industry.

Elsewhere, we introduce the latest intake for HJ’s Business Boardroom with Sean Hanna and L’Oréal Professionnel, and it’s striking how many salon owners are talking openly about leadership, confidence and the pressure of trying to grow a business in the current climate.

We also catch up with Hollyoaks stylist Tamara Robinson about life on set, while David Corbett takes us behind the collection that changed the course of his career. Enjoy the issue!
