Talking HEADS
Thinking of upgrading your service offerings? From head spas and scalp facials to supplements, there’s a growing list of add-on services to help with client’s scalp concerns
According to a 2024 beauty and wellness trend report*, Google searches for scalp serums averaged 30k a month, an increase of +99% on the previous year. The consumer appetite is real, so we spoke to the experts to find out how you can attract clients to the salon with a range of scalp treatments.
NIOXIN
In-Salon Treatments
Fact: scalp health is directly related to hair health. Mark Blake, Trichologist for NIOXIN, confirms that clients are more concerned about this than ever before. “Your skin doesn’t stop at your hair line, so if you cleanse your face, you should cleanse your hair,” he explains. “I see more problems on patients who don’t wash their hair frequently than on patients that do.”
One of the most in-demand treatments right now is Nioxin’s Dermabrasion Treatment, an anti-aging scalp dermabrasion treatment that helps regenerate and revitalise scalp skin through exfoliation. Mark describes it as the ultimate scalp facial, and it’s exclusively for in-salon use!
Meanwhile, Olaplex has the future in mind with the No.0.5 Scalp Longevity Treatment. Amanda Baldwin, Olaplex CEO shares: “This game-changing formula is designed to deliver long-lasting results, both today and tomorrow.”
Nicki Zammit, Aveda LSS Stylist & Scalp Specialist, also champions the importance of a regular routine when it comes to premature scalp ageing.“If the scalp is healthy the hair will grow healthier. My go-to product is Scalp Solutions Exfoliating Scalp Treatment; this foaming liquid gel has the key ingredient Wintergreen – a game changer to deeply exfoliate.” Another treatment making a difference for clients is the CALECIM Advanced Hair System. Alfredo Lewis, CALECIM Brand Ambassador tells us: “My clients have seen a noticeable improvement in six to eight weeks in scalp health and hair quality. The hair serum gives them a product that sets the foundation for gorgeous hair.”
CALECIM
It’s a no brainer that clients are applying the same skincare techniques to their scalp and many salons are adding advanced in-salon treatments such as detox masks, and LED therapy to their service menus. Laurine Berard, Hydrafacial Managing Director UK&I, says that salons investing in their Keravive by Hydrafacial technology are using it to elevate their premium service menus: “Stylists are increasingly positioning Keravive as part of a more personalised, wellness-focused experience for clients who are looking beyond cut and colour to address underlying concerns.”
AVEDA
Rise of the Japanese Head Spa
The Japanese Head Spa has been hailed as a holistic approach to healthy hair focusing on scalp health. Defined by Takara Belmont, the first company to develop the original Japanese Head Spa protocol and introduce it to the professional salon market, the treatment combines massage, washing, and a unique treatment mist. Katie Fielder, Takara Belmont’s National Sales Manager comments:
“Scalp care is an integral part of a Head Spa service and our Spa Mist II processor is essential for scalp care treatments, as it is scientifically proven to improve scalp and hair health.”
She adds that the service is compatible with all scalp care products and treatments making the Spa Mist II the perfect solution for salons looking to offer Head Spa services.
OLAPLEX
GLOWWA
Side Chat on Supplements
As salons evolve their services to focus on scalp health, some are looking towards retail, introducing supplements into their consultations. Krysia West, hair loss expert and GLOWWA Brand Ambassador explains: “HAIR FOOD, GLOWWA Collagen is packed with bioactive peptides and key amino acids like glycine, proline and hydroxyproline – all of which are crucial for building strong scalp tissue, supporting dermal collagen, and anchoring hair follicles. It’s exciting to see clients achieving better scalp and hair health from the inside out.” From targeted treatments to daily rituals, it’s clear the future of haircare starts at the root - and the education begins in the salon.
