VIDAL SASSOON STOP TRAFFIC WITH FLASH BOB EVENT
Following ‘Flash Bobs’ in New York and LA, the Vidal Sassoon team sent models and clients with the brand’s signature bob cuts out onto the streets of London to celebrate 70 years of the iconic brand. The models, aged 17-70, turned heads as crowds gathered to take pictures. When Vidal Sassoon conceptualised the bob, it wasn’t just a hairstyle, it heralded a cultural shift for women to a low maintenance style, freeing them from weekly salon appointments, lacquered hair and hours under the hood dryer. The new House of Sassoon in Soho’s Greek St is launching a bob course offering the chance to learn the cut from the originators.

Colour Services Putting Salon Profits in Jeopardy
One in five colour services is unprofitable and it’s putting salon businesses in jeopardy. Findings gleaned from salons implementing Vish colour management software – where all colour costs, charges, and waste are monitored – have revealed the average business loses money or, at best, breaks even on at least 20% of colour appointments. The biggest problem is rigid pricing, where a client is charged a set fee regardless of hair type or length. “No two guests are the same – each requires a different amount of product and every product costs a different amount,” says Danny Coles, UK Sales Manager for Vish and former hairdresser. “Some salons are charging extra for additional colour used, but often what’s charged is inexact.” Vish enables salons to match usage with costs, ensuring a client’s bill truly reflects their service. “We now have the data and finally, the solution to this problem. We can charge accurately, so that every service is profitable,” adds Danny. “Charging dynamically is better than a price increase, which penalises your regular and most loyal customers.”
Skills England: New National Body to Overhaul ‘Fragmented’ Skills System
Richard Pennycook, a Department for Education non-executive director, has been appointed as interim (temporary) chair of Skills England. This new national body aims to address the ‘fragmented and broken’ skills system in the UK.
Richard will lead the establishment of Skills England while the government works to appoint a permanent board, chair, and CEO. This development follows the recent King’s Speech, which announced legislation to transfer functions from the current Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE) to the new skills body.
The government stated that IfATE will continue to operate while Skills England is established over the next 9-12 months. However, the Department for Education has not yet clarified whether IfATE will eventually close once Skills England is operational. A Skills England bill, to be introduced in Parliament this year, will initially transfer ‘relevant’ functions from IfATE to the Secretary of State for Education during the set up phase. Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that Skills England will “kickstart economic growth, by opening up new opportunities for young people and enabling British businesses to recruit more home-grown talent.”
