INTO THE WOODS

From travelling the world to setting up shop in the trees, we take a peek inside former British Hairdressing Award winner Julian Holland’s salon

“We would like to think that the space we have created will have mass appeal, mainly due to its natural beauty”

From working in Australia, USA, Asia and Europe, to becoming a BAFTA Stylist and winning two British Hairdressing Awards, Julian Holland’s career in hairdressing has been nothing short of spectacular. So, when it came to his own salon, the stakes were high – which is perhaps why he decided to build it 10 feet up in the trees.

Julian Holland, Hair @ Hesslewood is a unique place for unique individuals, built from the ground up and nestled into the treetops at the tranquil Hesslewood Hall Estate. Handmade by joiners, the building was meticulously put together to fit seamlessly into its surroundings. While an architect was involved in the build itself, the interior of the salon was entirely designed by Julian and his wife Sophie.

KEY FACTS

Name: Julian Holland, Hair @ Hesslewood

Address: The Tree Tops, Hesslewood Hall Estate, Hessle, East Yorkshire, HU13 0LH

Owners: Julian and Sophie Holland

Size: 1,100 sq ft

How long have you been in the premises: 12 weeks

How many staff: 3 (and recruiting for stylists)

Budget: £100,000

Discussing some of the decisions they made, Julian explained: “We opted for a neutral colour scheme, as the windows allow the colours of nature to fill the space, and the walls were covered in vertical planks of wood with an unfinished rustic feel, to mimic the texture of trees outside.”

Julian also explained that they decided to look further afield when it came to furniture, to help create a unique environment – so the 12 styling stations and three backwashes were sourced from the USA, and all other furniture came from Valencia, Spain.

As with any salon, lighting had to be carefully considered. The space benefits from multiple skylights and windows, which introduce plenty of natural light, while soft LED lights and directional ceiling fixtures ensure that even on cloudy days, colour appears true-to-tone.

Elsewhere in the salon, practicality and aesthetics blend together; the floor is made of high-grade Amtico, which offers hard-wearing properties yet suits the neutral theme that can be seen throughout.

Although the salon has a very open layout, there are also quieter rooms for clients that prefer a little more privacy, and a balcony which overlooks the grounds can be enjoyed while colour and treatments develop. Reflecting on its unique setting, Julian says: “We would like to think that the space we have created will have mass appeal, mainly due to its natural beauty.”

The salon also promotes sustainable practices, including using 87% wood composite fibre towels that are completely compostable and hygienic, and offering coffee which is ethically sourced and packaged in 100% recyclable pods.

While designing their dream salon space has been the focus of their attention in recent months, the couple are keen to highlight other aspirations they have within the hair industry, with Julian adding: “We are also looking forward to investing in training the next generation and feel this is of great importance for the future of our trade.” The future is looking brighter already.
