What do you love most about being a colourist?

I love being able to change things instantly. Every day it can range from subtly changing the tone of someone’s hair to drastically changing the appearance of a client from appointment to appointment.

Where do you go for colour inspiration?

I always look at fashion, and what’s happening on the runways like Givenchy. I love the 90s too, I think it's so fun and so much changed in that period. I also tend to look on social media at young influencers like Sophie Floyd (@sophfloyd). There’s a huge movement of people experimenting again and being bold and I’m finding that inspiring right now. Also, I love art, so I always find inspiration in art galleries and books.

What are your favourite colouring techniques?

I absolutely love colour blocking – it’s making a comeback which I’m very happy about.

What colour trends are you pleased to see out of fashion?

I’m sorry, but it has to be dip dying. I’ve just never been a fan of that technique.

Are there any colour trends you’d like to bring back?

I think frosted tips on short hair should definitely make a comeback. There’s so much influence from the 90s at the minute, and I’m confident that this would look great with today’s take on it.

What are the challenges facing colourists right now?

The main challenge is the cost-of-living crisis. Everyone is watching their money at the moment so the big services and clients booking in for frequent appointments aren’t as common and have dropped.

What has been your most memorable colour consultation?

There are so many – too many to mention! But I do love it when a new client has been recommended to me by word of mouth, or friends and family, and we absolutely nail the colour.

What colour creation makes you most proud?

I get the most satisfaction from a really beautiful, clean blonde or a perfect application of colour. I think it’s so important to spend time actually applying the colour because if that's not done properly, your result will never look the best it can be.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

As a Colour Director and Educator, I enjoy supporting and watching my team grow. Also, being creative with my Art Team members and working on amazing projects with them; I love when we get totally consumed in something. I also adore being with my clients and making them feel great about themselves – Ihave some super loyal clients and I love catching up with them and having such strong relationships.

What advice would you give to a trainee colourist?

My main advice would be to make sure you enjoy the whole process. You’re going to get it wrong at some point, it’s inevitable and we all do, we are only human. But if you work on your understanding of theory and technique, you can do anything.
