What do you love most about being a colourist?
I love being both creative and challenged. To me, hair colour is the art of putting together a puzzle of what your client currently has, and their inspiration/ end goal.
What’s your favourite colour technique?
Balayage! I love lived-in, blended, luxurious and elevated natural colours.
What’s your colour predictions for the rest of the year?
Heading towards the cooler months, we’re definitely going to see darker tones but with more warmth than previous years. Think burnt coppers, chestnut and mahogany brunettes, and more golden blondes!
What’s one thing you wish every client knew about colour?
I wish every client knew how bespoke and personal colour is to them. If a client shows me an inspo pic of my previous work, the likelihood is I’d have to use a completely different technique and formula to give them a similar look.
What’s one colour trend you’re glad to see the back of?
The chunky DIY 2020 money piece! As much as I love a face frame and colour blocking, I’m glad clients have started requesting more softer face frames.
What’s your favourite colour creation you’ve done recently?
I recently converted a client of mine from five years of six-weekly scalp bleaches to a lived-in seamless old money blonde. It used all of my colour knowledge to formulate the perfect lowlight.
What’s your biggest colour no-no?
Looking at the colour book and picking a colour. For me, all formulas are custom mixed to create the perfect shade for each individual client.
What’s the one colour product you’d save in an emergency?
I’d love to say all of them! But if I had to pick, it would be my NXT ProTech Bleach – it’s the one product I use every day without fail.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learnt from being a colourist?
One of the toughest lessons I had to learn was how and when to say no. I think it’s the nature of our industry to want to please as much as possible – but sometimes we can’t perform miracles.
What’s your favourite ‘high impact’ colour service that takes less than an hour?
A face frame, 100%! It can completely refresh a lived-in colour.

1 BLENDED BALAYAGE
A combination of well-placed and formulated lowlights, and a seamless root melt gave the perfect seamless blonde.
2 MILK TEA BRONDE
Here, we were looking to enhance my client’s brunette and remove unwanted warmth, while keeping the hair dimensional and textured, yet seamless to grow out.
3 GOLDEN HONEY BALAYAGE
My client was looking for a brighter, lighter, lived-in and softly dimensional balayage keeping warmth and a naturally sun kissed effect.
