EXTENSIONS ERA

We get down to the nitty gritty with industry experts to reveal the trends, techniques and innovations shaping hair extensions in 2026

REMI CACHET

Hair extensions have remained on an upward trajectory as a styling option, and we’re now seeing clients place equal emphasis on the health of their hair, as well as achieving a premium finish. We explore the latest trends in luxe hair extensions, including the latest methods, new innovations, and key considerations including the importance of consultations and awareness of health conditions.

Innovative Installations

Once synonymous with dramatic transformations and instant length, hair extensions are entering a new era defined by personalisation, innovation and a growing focus on hair health. Clients are looking for more than just added inches; they want solutions that address thinning, enhance density, create colour without compromise and, fundamentally, protect the integrity of their natural hair.

As client expectations continue to evolve, so too do the techniques and products. From hybrid application methods and discreet attachment systems to detailed consultations that prioritise scalp health, extensions have become one of the most bespoke services.

“Extension methods have evolved significantly,” says Sarah Ethel, from Sarah Ethel Hair, Dublin. “It’s no longer just about a quick fix or instant length. The focus has shifted towards healthy, customised methods that support a client’s overall hair growth journey. By using improved application techniques and prioritising scalp health, maintenance and aftercare, we can protect the natural hair while still delivering beautiful, confidence-boosting results.”

Meanwhile, Victoria Lynch, Founder of Remi Cachet, adds: “The extensions industry is on a journey to change the narrative around extensions as a tailored solution for clients rather than a one-size-fits-all for length only. I am really proud that Remi Cachet has been leading that conversation through offering patented bonding methods like Ultra Tips and Injection Tapes and through the quality of both the hair and the training we offer. Thankfully, the trends have shifted towards extensions delivering a solution for volume, density and colour transformations and really customising every look to an individual’s needs.”

Best of Both Worlds

And it’s hybrid application methods that are proving particularly popular as clients seek truly personalised results with tailored placements according to their hair type, lifestyle and desired outcomes.

“I love working with hybrid methods,” says Pamela Docherty, Owner of Peeky & Ty, Glasgow. “Since the launch of the Great Lengths Weft Linea, I’ll often use a weft through the back to create that lovely thick feel and then scatter bonds or baby bonds through the sides to blend everything beautifully. It’s all about choosing the right method for the individual rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach. Tape extensions are another great option, particularly for clients who are perhaps a little nervous about extensions or prefer a shorter wear period. Having a variety of methods means we can really tailor the service to what works best for their lifestyle, hair type and goals.”

Sarah agrees, adding: “I’m particularly fond of hybrid methods, as combining different techniques often creates a more seamless, natural-looking result while prioritising the health of the natural hair. As high-quality hair extensions like Great Lengths can last for several months with the correct maintenance, clients have the freedom to experiment with different looks throughout the seasons without compromising the integrity of their own hair.”

GOLD CLASS

“HAVING A VARIETY OF METHODS MEANS WE CAN REALLY TAILOR THE SERVICE TO WHAT WORKS BEST FOR THEIR LIFESTYLE, HAIR TYPE AND GOALS.”

Similarly, Tracy Roche, Director of Kingsgrove in Harrogate, has seen demand shift dramatically. “The past several years have seen definite improvements in hair extensions. As specialists we have learned to refine our services to ensure that we use the least amount of hair possible to achieve the required look (this is important as hair costs have increased dramatically over the past several years). At least 40% of my current clientele require thickening services and not any length,” she says. “We have noticed improvements in extension companies being able to provide more textured hair such as naturally curly hair. We often use a hybrid method, such as wefts and tapes mixed together, to ensure the client gets the result they require.”

Building on Bespoke

It comes as no surprise that as extension services become increasingly bespoke, consultations are key. Thorough conversations are essential not only for achieving the desired results, but also for long-term hair and scalp health.

“For me one of the most important parts of the service definitely starts at the consultation,” says Tracy. “This is important to thoroughly assess the client’s hair and scalp and see if they are suitable for extensions. At this point we determine their budget, lifestyle and expectations. We also go through their medical history making sure there are no contraindications to prevent us from applying the extensions. We thoroughly go through the process and ensure that they have the correct aftercare and maintenance plan.” And it’s about being able to manage expectations that is equally critical, she adds: “If, for any reason, we feel uncomfortable with providing the service to the client (and this is often down to client expectations) we decline to do the extension service.”

Likewise, Inanch Emir, Inanch London, tells us: “A thorough consultation is the foundation of every successful extension service. We assess the client’s hair density, texture, scalp condition, lifestyle, styling habits and desired outcome before recommending a suitable method. It’s important to understand not only what a client wants to achieve, but also what their hair can safely support. We discuss maintenance commitments, aftercare requirements, colour matching, hair quality and realistic expectations. The consultation should always prioritise the long-term health of the client’s natural hair rather than simply delivering the biggest transformation possible. In many cases, the most professional recommendation may be less hair, a different method, or even delaying extensions until the natural hair is in a healthier condition.”

Something that Sue Davenport, CEO, Racoon Hair Extensions, highlights is the education around consultations. “Fundamental to all our teaching is the education around consultations – we install the teaching so that there are no shortcuts, no guessing,” she tells us. “The Racoon consultation is a one-to-one detailed discussion and assessment of the client’s scalp, hair and ability/commitment to look after the extensions in a way that is safe and consistent. It is the cornerstone of providing tailored and bespoke hair extension options that is right for each client. We teach that it is not a one size fits all for hair extension applications and have an extensive Racoon diploma offering that broadens and professionally develops stylists’ understanding and ability to design a truly bespoke service for their clients.”

“IT’S IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND NOT ONLY WHAT A CLIENT WANTS TO ACHIEVE, BUT ALSO WHAT THEIR HAIR CAN SAFELY SUPPORT.”

And for Stacy Odwell, Natural Hair Extensions Co., healthy hair remains the priority. “For me, extensions should enhance healthy hair, not compromise it. That starts with an in-depth consultation – assessing hair type, texture, lifestyle, scalp health, and choosing the most suitable service for each individual,” she says. “Scalp health is a huge part of this process, including understanding traction concerns, scalp sensitivity, thinning around the hairline, and educating clients on extension-safe maintenance to protect the integrity of their natural hair.”

Hair Health is Wealth

Long gone are the days extensions are used purely for length. Now, the service is seen as an important solution for clients experiencing hair loss, thinning and changes related to health conditions.

“We’re seeing more clients come to us specifically for density services rather than length,” Kirby Blythe, Hair By Kirby Blythe, tells us. “Clients with naturally fine hair or those experiencing thinning often want a solution that gives them fuller-looking hair while still supporting their long-term hair and scalp health.” And through detailed consultations, Kirby explains how they are able to assess hair density, scalp condition and any areas of concern before recommending a tailored extension plan. “Great Lengths allows us to strategically place hair exactly where it’s needed, natural-looking fullness while ensuring the natural hair and scalp remain healthy and comfortable throughout the wear period.”

Changes due to menopause and the increasing use of medications including Ozempic have also fuelled demand for targeted volume services. “With the rise of GLP-1 related hair loss and the increased conversations around menopausal thinning, extensions are the hero,” says Victoria. “Remi Cachet stylists offer ‘tweakments’ services for side-fillers and targeted volume. Bond methods such as Ultra Tips and Nano Wefts lay so flat that they are incredibly discreet and can be applied just where needed – no full head installation required.”

For clients recovering from medical treatments, extensions have a profound emotional impact. “One of our hero services is the Racoon Hair In Recovery programme,” Sue tells us. This service provides a much needed offering for those who are post-chemo. This programme is built around the absolute flexibility and bespoke design found in Racoon Luxe bond service and application. Using a gentle and unique organic bonding as opposed to the general commercial glues you find in the industry, coupled with the fine skills of creating micro bonds allows the stylist to create the most incredible transformations for clients.”

And as awareness around scalp health grows, so too does the industry’s responsibility to educate clients. As Johnny Yip, Managing Director of Zen Hair Extensions, tells us: “We’re having far more conversations now around scalp sensitivity, traction awareness, thinning around the hairline and extension-safe maintenance routines. That education piece is incredibly important.”

Trending Tresses

Technological advancements continue to reshape the industry, with lighter, more discreet and increasingly versatile systems at the forefront.

“One of the biggest advancements has been the development of smaller, lighter and more discreet attachment methods that place less stress on the natural hair,” says Inanch. “We’re also seeing improvements in hair quality, particularly with ethically sourced, cuticle-aligned Remy hair that offers superior longevity and a more natural appearance. Textured hair options have expanded significantly, giving clients access to beautiful naturally curly and wavy hair that offers superior longevity and a more natural appearance.”

“STYLISTS ARE MOVING AWAY FROM RIGID FULL-HEAD FORMULAS AND INSTEAD CREATING TAILORED PLACEMENT PLANS DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR THE INDIVIDUAL CLIENT.

Meanwhile, Dina Demetriou, Head of Education at Beauty Works, shares: “Innovation in professional extensions is really supporting a more personalised approach. Our latest professional launches, including the Beauty Works Double Wear® Reversible Weft and the new and improved Invisi® Tape, have been designed with flexibility, discretion and hair health in mind. The Reversible Weft gives stylists two complementary tones in one weft, making it easier to create a bespoke, multi-tonal blend without additional colour work. Invisi® Tape has been refined with a colour coded base, curved edge design and signature root injection tab to mimic the look of natural hair growth, creating a more seamless, comfortable and virtually undetectable finish.”

And at Zen Hair Extensions, it’s all about comfort. “Stylists are moving away from rigid full-head formulas and instead creating tailored placement plans designed specifically for the individual client,” says Johnny. “Zen Hair’s latest innovation, the Butterfly Weft, was developed in response to this growing demand for comfort-led, flexible extension solutions. Its lightweight construction creates exceptional flexibility and seamless blending while helping reduce bulk and unnecessary tension on the hair. It allows stylists to customise placement more precisely and create incredibly natural movement and volume.”

Keeping up With Colour

Extensions have also been used as a low-commitment alternative to colour services, and continue to do so – especially since we’ve seen a shift towards prioritising hair health.

“We love using coloured hair extensions for clients who want to experiment with lighter pieces, dimensional colour or fashion shades/pops of colour without chemical processing, extensions can offer a low-commitment alternative,” says Sharon Johnstone, Owner at Hair Couture. “This allows clients to enjoy some fashion colours while protecting the integrity of their natural hair.”

According to Zoë Irwin, Remi Cachet Expert: “Copper evolves for SS 2026, it’s multi-tonal and layered. Peach tones are softening reds into something more wearable. Dimensional copper extensions create this trend perfectly; they can be dialled up for impact, mixing richer, deeper, more burnished or softened into something lighter and more luminous.”

As clients continue to seek bespoke services that give gorgeous results and support natural hair health, extensions are proving that the most transformative results come not from adding more hair, but from delivering exactly what each individual needs.
