DO YOU DEVOTE TIME TO DOING CREATIVE WORK?

Two business owners discuss their and their team's approach to creativity

YES

“Creativity is paramount for hairdressers as it sets the stage for innovation and individuality. When there isn't a creative outlet, stylists may feel stagnant or unmotivated, or even run the risk of experiencing burnout. The recognition of creativity by peers is incredibly fulfilling. It not only boosts personal confidence but also elevates the salon's reputation. Knowing that your work is acknowledged also fuels a passion for pushing creative boundaries.

Juggling creativity with a bustling salon and business responsibilities requires effective time management - something that can take a while to perfect. Structuring the week to allocate dedicated time for creative endeavours, such as shoots or presentations, ensures a healthy balance. Embracing a team approach can also distribute creative responsibilities, which will also ensure an inclusive creative process, maximising the collective strengths of the team. In 2021 we decided to reduce our opening hours to a four-day-week, offering our team not only a better work/life balance, but more opportunities and time to develop their own creative skills within the salon and the industry.

While being creative demands time and financial investment, the returns are often substantial. Creative excellence can attract a broader clientele, elevate the salon's reputation, and lead to increased business. Being at the forefront of trends attracts a diverse clientele, leading to increased revenue and loyalty. It's an investment that pays off in the form of a dynamic, thriving salon.”

NO

“In our fast-paced salon industry, I’ve seen competitors going in different directions. There are those who dedicate a lot of time to creative work, while others focus on building their brand and business strategies. So, in these uncertain economic times, it can leave you wondering which way to go.

In this industry, does being super creative really guarantee economic security? My take is that investing in education, top-notch service, and clever marketing is a wise choice.

Having a team of skilled and motivated stylists is what really encourages people to walk through the door and sets the foundation for client satisfaction. It's all about mixing creativity with the more practical side in order to keep your business going strong.

Creative projects can make a salon stand out, but I would always suggest putting your resources into building a team of smart, passionate stylists, backed up by strong marketing and excellent service too. For me personally, the debate is whether spending on creativity is a risk. I know that being creative is absolutely amazing, but I always have to balance it against financial benefits. From my own personal experience, going all-in on creativity alone can be a gamble. At the moment, my priority is to focus on building a powerhouse team, using modern software tools integrated with AI, and a solid social media strategy for longterm success in this current market.”
