FUTURE FOCUSED
Research shows that clients want to see their salon doing more to be sustainable1 - start your journey today with L'Oréal's Hairstylists For The Future
L'Oréal Professional Products' Hairstylists For The Future is a dedicated programme that supports hair professionals in the UK & Ireland on their sustainability journey. Across five key pillars, the programme provides tools and solutions to encourage sustainable action within hair salons.
1 WATER: Protect water as a precious resource
The average salon will use approximately 133,000 litres of water per year.2
Washing hair, laundering towels and gowns as well as daily cleaning means salons are hugely reliant on water to operate effectively. Installing water-saving showerheads such as the L’Oréal Professionnel Water Saver could reduce water flow at the backwash by up to 69%.*

“SINCE HAVING THE L'ORÉAL WATER SAVER SHOWERHEADS INSTALLED, WE HAVE FOUND THAT THE POSITIVE IMPACT IS TWOFOLD. NOT ONLY ARE WE REDUCING OUR WATER CONSUMPTION IN SALON WITH THIS PATENTED TECHNOLOGY, BUT AS OUR CLIENTS EXPERIENCE THE DIFFERENCE AT THE BACKWASH, THEY HAVE BECOME MORE ENGAGED WITH OUR SUSTAINABILITY CREDENTIALS. BY SHARING HOW WE ARE TAKING SUSTAINABLE STEPS, WE CAN ENCOURAGE MANY TO CONSIDER THEIR OWN ACTIONS TOO. THIS IS A MUST-HAVE FOR SALONS; YOU’RE SAVING WATER, GIVING CLIENTS A BETTER EXPERIENCE, AND ENGAGING THE TEAM ON YOUR SUSTAINABILITY JOURNEY.”
2 WASTE: Reduce salon waste and support circular solutions
On average, only 20% of salon waste is recycled3 . Key salon waste streams including hair and metals are not widely recyclable in the UK & Ireland despite there being creative solutions available, such as using hair for fertiliser or to produce hair booms for oil spills. Specialist waste management companies such as Green Salon Collective and Recycle My Salon provide circular solutions for used foils, colour tubes and human hair - promoting zero waste to landfill.

3 CARBON FOOTPRINT: Help reduce salons' carbon footprint
The carbon footprint of the UKI hairdressing industry is equivalent to approx. 600,000 petrol cars on the road every year4 . Gas, electricity, employee commuting, refreshments and the products used in salon and sold to clients all contribute to a salon's carbon footprint. L’Oréal Professional Products and Net Zero Now have created the award-winning Net Zero Salons Initiative, an industry-first solution to support salon's on their journey to 'Net Zero'. A tailored reduction plan offers recommendations and highlights the small changes that can have a big impact. Available to all salons in the UK & Irelandbook your free consultation now.
“AT TREVOR SORBIE, WE ARE TAKING STEPS TO ENSURE SUSTAINABILITY IS AT THE CENTRE OF OUR BUSINESS AND THE NET ZERO SALON INITIATIVE ENABLES US TO DRIVE THESE COMMITMENTS FURTHER. USING THIS TOOL ALLOWS US TO TRACK AND MONITOR OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT SO THAT WE HAVE A GREATER UNDERSTANDING OF THE IMPACT OF OUR BUSINESS. WITH THIS INFORMATION AND OUR TAILORED REDUCTION PLANS WE CAN THEN START TO TAKE MEANINGFUL ACTIONS TO REDUCE OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT AND AIM FOR ‘NET ZERO’ CERTIFICATION.”
4 SPACE: Create sustainable salon spaces that are sustainable by design
By considering a salon’s environmental impact at the initial design stage or when upgrading and refurbishing, salon owners can better manage their overall carbon footprint by using materials that have less impact on the environment. The Hairstylists For The Future programme works in partnership with sustainable design agencies to create salon spaces that have the lowest embodied carbon and lowest waste possible. The Climate Action Playbook has been created to support salons on their sustainability journey and offers actionable tips specifically around salon spaces that aim to reduce their impact. “WHEN CREATING THE ARKIVE BY ADAM REED SALON SPACE WITH L’ORÉAL, THE WHOLE ETHOS WAS AROUND PUSHING THE BOUNDARIES IN SUSTAINABLE DESIGN. WORKING WITH A SUSTAINABLE DESIGN COMPANY, THE SPACE WAS BUILT WITH AN EXPLICIT GOAL TO CREATE THE LOWEST EMBODIED CARBON AND LOWEST WASTE POSSIBLE. MATERIALS AND SUPPLIERS WERE SELECTED WITH SUSTAINABILITY CREDENTIALS AT THE HEART. THE MAJORITY OF FIXTURES AND FITTINGS HAVE BEEN RECLAIMED, A PROCESS THAT SEES SUSTAINABILITY AND CREATIVITY GO HAND IN HAND. WE PRIORITISED PRE-LOVED, UPCYCLED PIECES, AND BROUGHT ITEMS WE’D COLLECTED OVER THE YEARS FROM OUR PREVIOUS SALON, WHICH MADE IT FEEL LIKE WE WERE JUST MOVING HOME.”
5 PEOPLE: Build a community of sustainability advocates
Salons and stylists are at the heart of local communities and can use their power ful voices to not only impact sustainable action within their own business but amongst their clients too.
By upskilling teams on sustainability via the free Hairstylists For The Future E-Learning, they can feel more empowered to have these conversations and advocate for sustainable change.

“AT FOWLER 35 UPSKILLING OUR TEAMS ON SUSTAINABLE SALON PRACTICES IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT. NOT ONLY DO WE HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO THE PLANET TO BE MORE SUSTAINABLE, BUT OUR CLIENTS EXPECT IT TOO AND THE TEAM ARE PROUD TO BE CONTRIBUTING POSITIVELY TO OUR IMPACT. IT ALL STARTS WITH EDUCATING OURSELVES AND WORKING WITH OUR PARTNERS, INCLUDING L’ORÉAL TO BETTER UNDERSTAND OUR IMPACT. THIS CONTINUES THROUGH THE CONVERSATIONS WE HAVE WITH OUR CLIENTS, PASSING ON OUR KNOWLEDGE AND ADVOCATING FOR SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES IN OUR COMMUNITY.”
